A special addition to this months Peabody Essex Museum PEM PM is a unique version of the Boars Head Carol procession and celebrating our good friend and Salem Main Streets director Kylie Sullivan (Salem Main Streets is the organization in charge of Salem Farmers Market, Salem Arts Festival, the info booth at Halloween and so much more)

That being said we would love to get a big group to show up and help us celebrate the final PEM PM of the year and Miss Kylie! Below you can find more information about the carol, lyrics and a couple examples of the song being performed.

What is a Boars Head Carol you ask?

via Wikipedia

The Boar’s Head Carol is a macaronic 15th century[1][2] English Christmas carol that describes the ancient tradition of sacrificing a boar and presenting its head at aYuletide feast. Of the several extant versions of the carol, the one most usually performed today is based on a version published in 1521 in Wynkyn de Worde’sChristmasse Carolles.

Caput apri defero
Reddens laudes Domino

1. The boar’s head in hand bring I,
Bedeck’d with bays and rosemary.
I pray you, my masters, be merry
   Quot estis in convivio

Caput apri defero
Reddens laudes Domino

2. The boar’s head, as I understand,
Is the rarest dish in all this land,
Which thus bedeck’d with a gay garland
Let us servire cantico.

Caput apri defero
Reddens laudes Domino

3. Our steward hath provided this
In honor of the King of Bliss;
Which, on this day to be served is
   In Reginensi atrio.

Caput apri defero
Reddens laudes Domino

….And now for something completely different…. Do you remember this from Chuck E. Cheese?
