A Discovering Technology Event

SALEM, Mass.–Salem residents of all ages are invited to Salem’s second annual DiscoTech Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 35 Congress St. Short for “Discovering Technology”, a DiscoTech is a multimedia fair for people to learn and share information about technology.

There will be two blocks of technology workshops, lightning talks by local technology companies, free food from Celia’s Restaurant and Goodnight Fatty, and multiple chances to win an iPad mini 4. The event will begin with guest speaker Samantha Viotty, a technology specialist at Emerson College.

Workstation topics include: virtual reality, augmented reality, mobile apps, social media, digital storytelling, and more! The event will conclude with highlights of technology projects around Salem and demonstrations by local technology companies.

This event follows the model developed by the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition, in which “participants learn more about the impacts and possibilities of technology, and take part in fun, interactive and media-based workshops. DiscoTech workshops are designed to demystify technology and create a space where we can inform and engage our community.”

This DiscoTech is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Salem State University Center for Civic Engagement, LEAP for Education, the North Shore Community Development Coalition, Creative Salem, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem, the Salem Public School District, and the City of Salem.

This event is sponsored by the National Communication Association and co-hosted by the Salem State University Center for Civic Engagement and LEAP for Education.
