9 Places to See Live Theatre North of Boston

Mamma Mia at Marblehead Little Theatre

2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year for North Shore theatre patrons as Community and Professional theatres are getting ready for their seasons, preparing these unique stages for a year of a great theatre.

Here are some of the North of Boston venues where you can expect to catch great live theatre in the coming months.

Ames Memorial Hall – Salem

Located on Essex Street adjacent to the Salem YMCA, Ames Memorial Hall is one of Salem’s hidden treasures. The historic space is used by the YMCA of the North Shore Theatre Co. for performances and arts programming for youth and adults. 

On the second and third weekend of February of 2020, they are hosting Third Citizen Theatre Company’s production of Othello.  

Arts After Hours – Lynn

Arts After Hours is a theatre company dedicated to invigorating the Lynn, MA creative economy. Based out of Lynn Museum/Lynn Arts in downtown Lynn, They have developed a reputation for producing fun and provocative shows such as Carrie: the Musical, Dog Sees God, and Edges, among many others.

The Cabot – Beverly

The Cabot Theatre is turning 100 in 2020 and they will be celebrating a full year of live music, theatre, and entertainment. Opened in December 1920 as a dream palace of vaudeville and silent movies, it was once hailed as “the most impressive auditorium of its size east of New York.

New events and shows are announced all the time, so make sure to check out The Cabot Theatre’s event page for up to date information. 

Salem State University’s Center for the Arts – Salem 

Salem State University’s Center for the Arts is home to dozens of live music, performance, and theatre events every year. The Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts and the Callan Theatre Black Box feature a diversity of student and professional work throughout the year. 

In February, they are producing Bedroom Farce by Alan Ayckbourn in Callan Theatre. Click here for tickets. 

Firehouse Center for the Arts – Newburyport

Firehouse Center for the Arts in Newburyport is a non-profit 191 seat theatre constantly producing diverse shows and live entertainment. Open year-round, this historic theater is a unique destination in downtown Newburyport where guests are sure to see and hear some old favorites as well as brand new productions.

They have two upcoming productions in February. The first is [title of show] by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell from February 7 – February 16. Next up is Good & Kissed for one night only on February 21 @ 8:00 pm. Click here for full event listings and tickets. 

Gallows Hill Museum Theatre – Salem

This creepy, kooky, spooky theatre, owned and operated by Erik Rodenhiser, is home to various theatre productions throughout the year, and more frequently in October and December. It’s home to the Gallows Hill Experience, the Very Grinchy Holiday Special, and is largely responsible for the popular Christmas Carol Trolley Rides.

Marblehead Little Theatre – Marblehead

All volunteer and community-based Marblehead Little Theatre is a treasure of downtown Marblehead with a reputation for producing fun and exciting shows, many of which are brand new! The theatre has been in the current location, the old firehouse, since 2000. 

The Theatre will be putting on multiple productions throughout 2020, starting with Young Frankenstein in March. Check out their events page for full listings and to buy tickets. 

North Shore Music Theatre – Beverly 

This internationally renowned theatre has a knockout lineup of productions in 2020 that just can’t be missed. Since 1955, NSMT has become one of the most attended theatres in New England, with approximately 250,000 patrons annually. 

The 2020 season includes Thoroughly Modern Millie, Little Shop of Horrors, and Kinky Boots. Season passes are available – Click here to get tickets. 

Stage 284 – Hamilton-Wenham 

Situated in the Hamilton-Wenham Community House, Stage 284 has been putting on regular productions of classic, family-friendly plays and musicals since 2008. Now in their 12th year, Stage 284 is planning an exciting 2020 season meant to entertain theatre lovers of all ages.
