Have you ever wanted to participate in the rescuing of a historic local cultural institution? Do you want to brag to all your friends about how your generosity and support helped to bring back a beloved venue and helped usher it into its thriving future here on the North Shore?
Well now you can! Recently, Salem’s very own Cinema Salem announced its official “I Saved Cinema Salem” Crowdfunding Campaign, making it possible for you to play a hand in saving the much beloved theatre. They are looking to raise $75,000 by the end of June.
“Having an independent, downtown movie theater is a tremendous asset for our community. I’m so pleased that this team has been able to revive this special amenity to help keep Salem vibrant and active!” said Mayor Kim Driscoll (she/her/hers).
The funds raised by the campaign will go towards much needed upgrades to fixtures like carpets, bathrooms, and the HVAC system, along with other improvements that prioritize visitor comfort and live entertainment capabilities.
“We are elated over the enthusiasm from the community about the cinema’s reopening. Messages of support have come from all directions,” said Marshall Strauss (he/him/his), co-owner of the cinema. “Many have asked if they can help in some way. This crowdfunding campaign is one answer,” he added.
“This community has so much love for the cinema. I expect a great response to this campaign,” said John Andrews (he/him/his). “It’s not just that people want to see movies again, but the cinema aims to become a hub for arts and culture in the North Shore, and a real resource for the creative workforce AND the community.”
“Painting is almost finished. New carpet will go in soon. The place is starting to look great,” said Elaine Gerdine, Strauss’s wife and cinema co-owner.
The Cinema is planning to open to the public on Memorial Day weekend if the current trends and regulations due to the pandemic keep progressing in a positive direction. For behind the scenes photos and videos of the progress please follow @cinemasalem
