In your words… Tell us about your organization, business, initiative.

Essex County Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit builder of affordable homes. Established in 2020, following a merger between Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity and North Shore Habitat for Humanity, we look forward to serving more families across Essex County.

We are the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the largest nonprofit homebuilder in the world with a network of over 2,100 branches. We build safe, simple, affordable, and comfortable homes in partnership with the families who need them. Since 1985 we have delivered on our mission for over 150 families to date.

To help fund our work, Essex County Habitat operates two ReStores, one located in Lawrence, and the other in Peabody, where we sell donated appliances, furniture, building materials, and home furnishings at greatly reduced prices. Apart from funding our mission, the ReStores also keep thousands of tons out of landfills, making a significant environmental impact as well.

Tell us a bit about you and why you do what you do? Share your passions for your business, initiative, organization.

Access to affordable housing is more important than ever. If 2020 taught us anything, it is that everyone is safer at home.

Pre-pandemic, 1 in 7 families here in Massachusetts paid 50% or more of their income towards housing, forcing families to choose between essentials and a roof over their head. This is unacceptable! Everyone deserves access to a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home.

What role do you think your business plays in supporting a more creative community? OR your community in general.

Our Habitat ReStores, located in Peabody and Lawrence, provide the creative community with access to affordable and high-quality items that they can use in their projects. Home improvers and DIYers are able to find items they wouldn’t easily find elsewhere. Items they are able to turn into their own masterpiece.

Creative outlets are essential to one’s wellbeing. A community with healthy outlets is a happier and safer community.

What was the last thing you watched or book you read that made an impact on you?

Seaspiracy – even though I always take things like this with a grain of salt, it REALLY angers me what humans are doing to our earth and the animals.

What’s the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you our your business?

Our affiliate is run by women. Not that it should be a surprise, but most people imagine that an organization that builds affordable houses is run by men, so it’s definitely worth noting.

For every dollar sold at one of our ReStores, 1.3 pounds is kept out of landfills – We keep thousands of tons out of landfills each year.
