The Chaos Within Podcast – Create from Within with Anna Dugan

Anna Dugan of Annadidathing is a Filipina American mural artist, illustrator, and weirdo extraordinaire based in Salem, MA. She joins Joey on the podcast to talk about the Mariposa Project, why failure is important, and what it means to create from within.

In February of this year, Anna partnered with Creative Collective and the North Shore Mall to raise support for those affected by the eruption of the Taal Volcano in the Philippines. Anna live painted a mural on a grid of 9 Balikbayan Boxes which, once they dried, were filled with goods and supplies to be sent to those affected regionally.

The mural she painted held the phrase We are not defined by our hardships. But by our resilience.

Which is something which is especially relevant at the moment.

Listen to the podcast to hear more about her process and learn how she’s using art to cope with this quarantine. You can find out more about her at Annadidathing.com or by following her on Facebook

Time for an honest self portrait. We are living in a scary time. There’s so much happening that we are not in control of and there’s so many unknowns. How long will this last? How will this affect our futures? How bad will this get? Why are people still not listening? This lack of control and derailing of our everyday normalcy is going to give us some intense reactions. And you know what? YOU’RE ALLOWED. This is a global pandemic. You’re allowed to be afraid. You’re allowed to grieve your ruined birthday, travel plans, general freedoms. You’re allowed to be worried about the future. You’re allowed to get overwhelmed and ugly cry, I mean REALLY ugly cry about it all. I’m talking snot & dry heave ugly cry. It’s okay. Try to be kind and compassionate to yourself and just allow yourself to feel everything you need to. Let it out then let it go. Sometimes we need to let these feelings pass through us in order to move on from them. And it might take 2, 3, or 100 passes before we truly feel okay again. But give yourself permission to react to our current reality. It’s normal. It’s healthy. And letting yourself feel it, will help let those feelings go. So go on. Feel with intensity. Ugly cry it out. Binge watch Tiger King. Eat that queso. Light that candle. Take that bubble bath. Do whatever you need to do. And then in time let it go. Because this won’t be forever. We will make it through together. But until we reach the other side, feel what you gotta. You’re allowed. 🙏🏼💛 . . . . #annadidathing #youreallowed #pandemic #covid19 #coronavirusart #digitalart #ipadart #procreate #digitalportrait #creativenorthshore #creativecollectivema #ccmembersrock #essexcountycreates #entrepinayship #filam #socialdistancing #quarantineartclub #modernsuperhero #nyhero #flattenthecurve #stayhomeforthem #womenofillustration #ladieswhodesign #honestgram #keepitreal #tobehonest #realgram
